February Update

Tomorrow is the twenty-ninth, the leap year is almost upon us, and I realised I hadn’t updated here in a very, VERY long time. New Year’s Eve, I think.

I remember where I was four years ago on the last leap year. I went to see Rammstein play at the Metro arena in Newcastle. It was a fantastic gig, probably one of, if not THE best I’ve ever been to. Their stage show was amazing, everything about them was electric from their entrance to their exit.

Anyway. What’s new? What have I been up to?

Well, writing still, as always. I’m reviewing CD’s on a regular basis for R2 magazine now, and the perk of this is that I get to go to a gig for free sometimes, like a couple of weeks ago when I saw the fucking awesomely talented John Grant at the Sage in Gateshead. The month before that, in January, on the day of David Bowie’s death, coincidentally, I was lucky enough to catch Henry Rollins on his latest spoken word tour, though I wasn’t reviewing this and I didn’t get in for free haha. He was at the Tyneside Theatre and Opera House in Newcastle, he spoke at length for three hours. Rollins is an incredibly interesting man, and very funny, and I enjoyed seeing him a great deal, it was totally worth the numb backside I had by the end of it from sitting through a very small and uncomfortable chair. Seeing him was a big deal for me though, as, and I know this will sound pretentious, Henry Rollins is a man I identify with a great deal. Every time I watch his videos on YouTube, hear him talk, my head is just nodding along in agreement with practically every sentence.

Okay, so, writing! This year I hit a benchmark with my thirtieth short story seeing print, online at a sweet site called Fried Chicken and Coffee, the tale was called ‘The Gun At The End Of The Night’, and was my attempt at writing a Harry Crews story. I might not have succeeded in that goal, but shit if I wrote a Paul Heatley story then I’m pretty happy with that, too.

Other stories that have seen publication thus far this year, both online and in print, included ‘God May Forgive You’ in issue one of Crime Syndicate, ‘Big Ben’ in issue one of Dead Guns Magazine, and ‘Lady’s Choice’ over at Spelk. There are more in the pipeline, and hopefully more beyond that, and I’m working hard on some other stuff so fingers crossed I’ll have bigger news. Gotta keep striving for bigger and better, gotta keep moving on! I work hard, I enjoy working hard, and I enjoy seeing the fruits of these labours just as much, if not more so.

There are two quotes I keep coming back to lately, one I read just yesterday and has been running through my head ever since. It comes from Malcolm X, he said ‘The future belong to those that plan for it today.’ The other is from body builder Mike Mentzer, and I’m going to paraphrase it as it was quite a long passage in his book on high-intensity training. It went ‘If you look at those at the top of any profession, you will invariably find they got there through wanting it the most.’ I guess they’re sticking with me because they’re both about hard work, and when I feel like slacking off I give myself a slap and repeat them to myself and get back to work. All this work I’ve set for myself, ain’t no one else gonna do it for me.

So one more, that’s been particularly relevant to me lately, in what has, personally, been a pretty shitty 2016 so far, and I believe it was said by Winston Churchill, but I know it best from Sage Francis’ ‘Vonnegut Busy’: ‘When it feels like you’re going through Hell, keep going.’

I’m gonna close with some shameless self promotion; below are the links to my six novellas, The Motel Whore, The Vampire, The Boy, The Mess, The Pitbull, and Three. In case you’re curious, those first three make up a very loose trilogy. All are available for the Kindle from Amazon, and that’s what I’ll be linking to below.

Year In Review

So, to start I’ll get this out the way: my goal for 2015 was to self-publish six novellas, and as of today I’ve hit that goal. ‘Three’ is now available for Kindle from Amazon for the super low price of 0.99, here’s a link:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Three-Paul-Heatley-ebook/dp/B01A090GTA/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1451597303&sr=1-1&keywords=three+paul+heatley

If you’ve been keeping up, you’ll know it’s gonna be dark, it’s gonna be bloody, and it ain’t for everyone. But hell, if brutal and unflinching and unapologetic is your kind of thing, then it’s right for you, so click the link and give yourself a late Christmas present!

Okay. 2015. I don’t make resolutions, I don’t think I ever have. Going into this past year I had the goal to tackle it head-on in terms of writing, and I’m pleased with what I’ve accomplished. The prior mentioned six novellas, and fourteen short stories that have appeared either online or in print, as well as numerous contributions to the music magazine R2. I wrote every single day, too, the first year I’ve ever done that.

Going into 2016, again I’m not planning on making any resolutions. Right now my only plan is to take 2016 by the throat, and squeeze real fucking hard.

Good luck to taking your own new year in hand, only a couple of hours to go. I hope goals were accomplished in 2015 and it didn’t feel like a waste, let’s not waste 2016.

The Captain and The Snakes

The newest issue of Thuglit, issue twenty, is out today, and it features my story ‘The Captain and the Snakes’. It’s my second time there since my story ‘Red Eyed Richard’ appeared way back in issue three. I wrote it by hand in late February 2014 while holed up in my bed with flu (real flu, not man flu – I went to the doctor and everything) and listening to The Handsome Family and thinking about True Detective season one.

The link is below, available for Kindle and in paperback, check it out!

New Novella Number Two!

Just uploaded my second newest standalone novella, ‘The Pitbull’! It won’t be live yet, but it’s done, it’s on it’s way out there into the big wide world and I’m sat here like a proud parent. That makes my current total of self-published novellas five, and as I stated in my last (or the one before that) post, my goal for this year was six. I’m pretty much there. The sixth is written. Soon I’ll start the process of editing it.

Below are the front covers for both The Mess and The Pitbull. Aren’t they both fucking glorious? They’re magnificent, The Pitbull particularly. It’s all kinds of fucked up, much like the story itself. As per usual, they were designed by the supremely talented Ben Shanks. I really think he’s outdone himself with The Pitbull. The more I look at it the more I love it.

Snazzy front cover over once again provided by the inimitable Ben Shanks. It’s a nice and nasty slice of North-eastern noir, go and check it out! Thanks in advance to all the wonderful people that choose to do so.

Now, to get back to work on everything else.

New Novella!

Has anyone listened to John Grant’s new album yet – ‘Grey Tickles, Black Pressure’? I’m listening to it right now, it’s so damn good. John Grant is amazing.

Now, onto business!

I’ve just finished uploading my newest novella to Kindle, first since The Boy back in May. It’s not live yet, I’ll be back with a link when it is.

It’s entitled ‘The Mess’, and whereas ‘The Motel Whore’, ‘The Vampire’, and ‘The Boy’ were all part of a very loose trilogy set in an unnamed American town, this is a standalone story and is set in the north-east of England. Like I say, I’ll give more details once it’s available for purchase, which will probably be sometime tomorrow.

However, uploading ‘The Mess’ makes today a triple-whammy Friday for me – I’ve had two short stories published in print. With it being in print I can’t guarantee they’re actually available, but today was the release date that I was told. ‘Sexy’ will appear in issue nine of Handjob zine (my second time there), and ‘Wor Jackie’ will be in issue fifteen of Open Pen. Here are the links to their respective sites:

And, if things go according to plan, I should be releasing ANOTHER novella next week! Again, it will be standalone. It’s going to be something very dark, and very different. My goal for 2015 was to publish 6 novellas. I’m on track to accomplish that, the sixth is written and I’ll be getting to work on editing it etc once number five has been published. Then it’s on to 2016, and a whole new set of goals!

Bump

I’ve had a new story published today, it’s over at Horror Sleaze Trash, an awesome Australian website ran by a fella called Ben John Smith. It’s my third time being published at HST, it’s one of my favourite websites and Ben is always really enthusiastic in his correspondence when accepting stories etc, which is really nice. Plus, he’s an awesome poet in his own right. I recommend everyone takes a look round the site and checks out the other stories and poems, and all the wonderful photography of tasteful nudes et al. The link to mystery is below.

Rectify

A few weeks ago all the shows I was watching seemed to end almost simultaneously (well, within a few weeks of each other). I’ve been somewhat bereft since then. However! Fear The Walking Dead started the other week. I love zombie shit, always have, ever since I first saw the remake of Night of the Living Dead (yes, the remake). I saw the original not long after, and since then I’ve hunted out as many good zombie films as I can. I love The Walking Dead. I actually prefer the show to ttheĀ comic, though they’re both entertaining in their own right. Fear The Walking Dead got off to a good start, I’m really enjoying the menacing, tense slow burn. Eager to see where it goes.

But I’ve also started watching Rectify. Seen the first four episodes of season one so far. Now that’s a real slow burn, but the characterisation and dialogue have been absolutely perfect so far, the performances are all spot-on. The main guy, I think he’s called Aden Young, reminds me a lot in his mannerisms of Tom Hardy, and his American accent is quite similar to Mr Hardy’s American accent too (I believe Aden Young is Australian). It’s a quite melancholy affair, though has real flashes of humour and hope interspersed throughout. But did he kill her? Didn’t he?? It’s one of those shows that hasn’t really blown up with audiences and I think it’s pretty much unknown over here, but it’s certainly worth checking out. I heard of it through the singer Jim White posting about it on Facebook, and I really enjoyed the creator Ray McKinnon’s appearance in season four of Sons of Anarchy.

Anyway, winter is coming so there’s probably gonna be a whole hell of a lot more TV to check out before long. The Walking Dead and Arrow will probably return soon. What else is there?? I’m sure there’s more… Actually, speaking of Sons of Anarchy I still need to check out the last two seasons!

Power cut

Power cut in Hadston tonight. I needed to write. No laptop? I’m not afraid of ink and paper. Get out the scented candles, I’m gonna kick this old school. I felt like Charles Dickens writing by candlelight. Ain’t nothing gonna hold me back. I thought of Black Coffee Blues by Henry Rollins – ‘If I lose the light of the sun, I will write by candlelight, moonlight, no light. If I lose paper and ink, I will write in blood on forgotten walls. I will write always. I will capture nights all over the world and bring them to you.’

Progress

Well it’s been a few months now since I released The Boy out into the world, wrapping up the very loose trilogy that began with The Motel Whore and was continued in The Vampire. I’m currently working on something new, so,etching set entirely outside the continuity of the trilogy, something standalone. Two somethings, in fact, but thus far I’ve only read one of them so the other could fall apart at the first proof-read. I’m hopeful that it doesn’t. Unlike the trilogy, which was American-set, this new one is closer to home, in Northumberland, in a small coastal town based on the one I grew up in. More details to come closer to the time I decide to release it (which will hopefully be soon), but in the meantime I will continue to read the fuck out of it to get it into publishing shape, and I’ll take a look at this other one, too. I’d say these two are more violent than the trilogy, whereas the trilogy had a lot more sex.

Anyway, in the meantime, here’s some links to the trilogy for anyone that might be interested. Fair warning in advance – they’re dark, they’re graphic, they don’t hold any punches. Other than that they’re fun for all the family!
